What colour should I wear?

What colour should I wear?

Short answer: Whatever colour makes you happy.

Seriously.

If you put on a colour you love, you'll probably wear it more often and feel more like yourself. That's worth far more than following someone else's rules.

Long answer...

The problem is that sometimes there are six perfectly good options you love, and the human brain responds by making absolutely no decision whatsoever. (Especially if that brain happens to come served with a side dish of ADHD.)

We know because people keep asking us.

"I love this shirt... but which colour should I order?"

"I have absolutely no idea what suits me."

And honestly? Fair enough.

For some reason, we're expected to know which colours complement us without anyone ever actually teaching us. We learn maths at school. We learn history. Some of us even learn the recorder. But nobody ever sits us down and explains why one shade of green makes us look fresh and alive while another makes us look like we've spent the past three weeks recovering from some fascinating pathology that hasn't made it into the textbooks yet.

Most of us just buy things and hope for the best.

Sometimes that works.

Sometimes you accidentally assemble a wardrobe that would make Yves Klein very proud.

We don't particularly like unnecessary trial and error.

At AYAMI, we spend a slightly unreasonable amount of time asking ourselves:

"Can we make this easier?"

That's why we send out free fabric samples.

It's why we explain our fabrics in painful detail.

It's why we try to make shopping based on needs instead of fashion terminology.

And it turns out colour deserved the same treatment.

So we built a colour guide.

It asks you a handful of simple questions about yourself—your skin tone, eye colour and hair colour.

Based on your answers, we estimate which colours are more likely to complement your natural features, which ones tend to work reasonably well, and which ones might be worth approaching with a little more caution.

Notice the words more likely.

This isn't magic.

There is no universally "correct" colour. Personal taste matters. Confidence matters. Lighting matters. And if your favourite colour happens to be one that colour analysis tells you isn't ideal... wear it anyway. Life's too short.

But if you're standing there wondering whether to order Emerald Green, Twilight Blue or Wine Red, it's nice to have somewhere to start besides "eeny, meeny, miny, moe."

Even better, you can actually see the colours.

One thing that always struck us as slightly odd about colour guides is that they often show tiny coloured circles or squares.

That's... not especially helpful.

So instead, you can choose a model that looks reasonably similar to you and see what the different colours look like on them.

Is it exactly what you'll look like?

No.

Is it considerably more useful than staring at a blue square and trying to imagine the rest?

We think so.

You only have to do it once.

Once you've completed the guide, you can save your results to your AYAMI profile.

The next time you're browsing the shop, you won't have to remember whether Forest Green or Ocean Blue was the better option—you can simply come back to your recommendations whenever you need them.

One less thing to keep in your head.

Give it a try.

If you've ever found yourself asking, "I like this... but which colour?", we made this for you.

It only takes a couple of minutes, and even if you end up ignoring every recommendation we give you, at least your choices will be slightly more informed than throwing a dart at the colour chart.

(Which, to be clear, is still a perfectly valid strategy if that's your thing.)
