Why AYAMI Started With Clothes for Adults
Share
When people hear about AYAMI, they are sometimes surprised that we started with adult clothing. After all, much of the conversation around sensory differences, autism, ADHD, and adaptive products focuses on children.
And that is exactly why we did it.
Why We Started With Adults
There is a growing awareness that clothing can be difficult for some people. Children who struggle with certain fabrics, dislike tags, or are sensitive to seams, textures, and temperature are increasingly being recognized and supported. As a result, many products, services, and resources have been developed with children in mind.
But children grow up, and many of those challenges do not disappear with age.
As an adult, I still struggle to find clothing that feels right. Certain fabrics are uncomfortable. Some garments feel distracting throughout the day. Others look great but become unpleasant after a few hours of wear. Finding clothing that works consistently often feels like a process of trial and error.
When I started looking for solutions, I noticed that many products and resources were aimed at children, while adults were often left to figure things out on their own.
Yet adults continue to live full lives. They have different needs, different preferences, and different ways of expressing themselves. They deserve clothing that supports them in those moments—whether they are relaxing at home, attending an important event, exercising, travelling, or simply going about their day.
Comfort does not stop mattering when you become an adult.
Why AYAMI Exists
When I looked for clothing designed with people like me in mind, I found surprisingly few options. And the options that did exist often focused on solving only one problem.
Maybe they removed tags. Maybe they used softer fabrics. But comfort is rarely that simple.
Some people struggle with seams. Others overheat easily. Some need softer fabrics. Others need garments that are easier to put on and take off. Some simply want clothing that does not demand their attention throughout the day.
The details differ, but the result is often the same: clothing becomes harder than it should be.
That is why AYAMI started with adults. We wanted to create clothing for people who had spent years adapting themselves to clothing, rather than clothing adapting to them.
People who wanted clothing that felt comfortable. People who wanted clothing that fit their lives. People who wanted clothing that helped them feel like themselves.
Today, AYAMI serves people with many different backgrounds, diagnoses, body types, and experiences. But the mission remains the same as it was on day one:
To create clothing that adapts to people, rather than expecting people to adapt to clothing.
Because comfort does not stop mattering when you become an adult. And no one should have to spend a lifetime searching for clothes they can truly enjoy wearing.
